For early forage, the quality with which a colony starts is crucial: long-lived nurse bees, stable brood cycles, and a timely developed, healthy bee mass. Protein feed paste can secure this foundation – especially in years with early brood activity and delayed or weather-affected pollen availability.
It does not solely decide the yield – but often influences the starting conditions.
Brief Note: Protein Feed Paste in Late Summer
Protein feed paste can be useful not only in spring but also in late summer. In many regions, despite lush vegetation (“green hell”), there is a real shortage of usable pollen – sometimes also nectar. It is precisely at this stage that winter bees are created or prepared.
For the rearing of high-quality winter bees, adequate protein supply is crucial. If missing, bees with weaker physiological reserves and often shortened lifespans are born – often only evident the following spring.
Important: Late summer is also the core Varroa period. Protein feeding is only sensible if Varroa/viral load is under control and there is a real protein deficiency – otherwise, you increase brood (and potentially mite reproduction) in an already critical phase.
